Last night I spent about 45 minutes surgically removing all the tags, toggles and patches from everything I could with the tiny scissors on my Leatherman and a seam ripper. I think I saved about 1 ounce… Whoopee… I don’t know if it was worth it. But who needs toggles when you can just tie a knot? And why would I want all these tags weighing me down? The other day I had my friends boyfriend saw my spork, knife and tooth brush handles off (Thanks Jordy!). Somehow that felt more rewarding, although; since the cut off, somehow it seems like I’m eating slower.
My pack still has all kinds of straps hanging off it, and a small divider used to separate the sleeping bag compartment from the rest of the bag. I am debating cutting them off too, but am worried that I will regret it some day. What in the future I get chubby and my waist belt is too small because I cut all the extra webbin’ off? Or what if my sleeping bag and my tent get into a fight and need to be separated?
Psh. Tonight they are all getting cut off too. Snip snip!
i support you….you are doing what you need to do and that is all that matters.
now that’s going to the extreme removing all those tags and webbing!
I have trouble leaving books and camera gear behind. What are you doing about those?
I’m bringing a small bible, and a tiny journal, but I LOVE reading, so I may pick up a book along the way. I’m bringing my digital camera and charger. Its one of those everything proof cameras, a sweet gift from my uncle, so I’m not worried about it.
Cut the tags off. I can see a tag on that bag. Tags add up!
Good eye! I missed that one.
Also, you can save even further weight by brushing your teeth with bar soap. Seriously I started doing it and it is amazing!
Just make sure you rinse well.
Nik you can just use the charcoal from your fire, why cary bar soap.
Have you considered shaving your head? You probably have like at LEAST 1 lb of hair… that’s 16 ounces!!
Also, both your eyebrows equal probably a 10th of an ounce.
Julia don’t forget to leave a good bag for me to bring down to you in June.
